Lake Murray – Columbia, SC

Lake Murray is a 41 mile long, 50,000 acre lake created by the Saluda Dam. The dam was completed in 1930 and was the worlds largest earthen dam at the time of it’s completion. The lake was named after it’s chief engineer William S. Murray. The lake is a short 30 minute drive west of Columbia, South Carolina and just over an hour drive from Augusta, Georgia. With its convenient location the lake is a popular destination for locals and visitors from the surrounding areas.

Lake Murray Recreational Activities

Recreational activities at the lake include, boating, camping, fishing, nature watching, picnicking, jet skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, wakeboarding, hiking, biking and swimming.

Dreher Island State Park

Dreher Island State Park is a 348 acre park surrounded by the waters of Lake Murray. With it’s great location the park is one of the most popular destinations at the lake. Activities and amenities available at the State Park include boat launch ramps, camping, lakeside rental villas, fishing, picnic shelters, playgrounds, hiking and biking trails and more.

Boating

For boaters there are numerous launch ramps and marinas located throughout the lake. These provide easy access to the waters of Lake Murray. If you do not own a boat but would like to spend some time on the water rental boats are available. Pontoon boats and fishing boats are available for rent at most marina locations. Most Lake Murray marinas offer both wet and dry storage for storing your boat at the lake.

Camping

A number of developed RV and tent campgrounds are available on a nightly or longer term basis. Campgrounds are located at Dreher Island State Park and at multiple commercial campground locations. For large gatherings picnic shelters and playgrounds are available for rent at Dreher Island State Park.

Fishing

The fishing at Lake Murray is considered excellent. Common fish species caught at the lake include striped bass, large mouth bass, catfish and crappie. Numerous fishing tournaments are held throughout the year at the lake. Check with local marinas and tackle shops for tournament schedules. A valid South Carolina Fishing license is required for fisherman over the age of 16. Fishing is permitted from both boat and from shoreline locations.
